Q: Why did you decide to start your business?

This started as a hobby. We moved to Saratoga Springs and my son said lets do this.

Q: When did you start the business?

In the last twenty five years, Tom and I have developed a passion for bar building and entertaining. What started as a hobby has produced years of fun and memories so we decided to make it official when we moved to Saratoga.

Q: How did you get started in Saratoga?

We went to the ‘How to Start a Business’ seminar through the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. It helped us tremendously. The first thing we did was join the chamber.

Q: What exactly is GURKA’s Original Bar Rooms, LLC?

We help you design a fun area in your house. It’s taking advantage of your unused space in the house, whether it’s the basement or some room upstairs.

Q: Do you consult with the customer first?

Normally we get the initial idea and look at the space. We’ve done a 15-year old home and a relatively new home. We get basic measurements and brainstorm ideas then go back to the customer.

Q: What exactly goes into designing a bar or game room?

The sky’s the limit. It’s really up to your imagination and what you want. We sit down with you to get ideas, come up with a design and see what you think. If it doesn’t work on paper, it won’t work in real life.

Q: How do the rooms differ?

We have four basic designs, but it really depends on the design of the house. You can have a bar and a billiard room; a bar and arcade room; or a bar and home theater. Or it can be the combination of them depending on the size of the area.
